Sirena DVD
Synopsis
At the time of its release, 'Sirena' was hailed as one of the great Czech films, alongside Řeka' and 'Extase, representing the artistic film form. The story revolves around the mining family Hudcových set against the backdrop of dramatic events in 1889 in the Kladno region. Rising discontent among the miners due to poor conditions and low wages leads to a strike. However, the general director and owner of the mines, Bacher, refuses to negotiate with the miners. Following the suicide of one of their own, the situation escalates quickly, and the miners decide to take matters into their own hands. Directed by Karel Steklý, based on Marie Majerová's novel of the same name, the film stars Mária Vášová and Ladislav Boháč in the lead roles. With expressive cinematography by Jaroslav Tuzar and music composed by E. F. Burian, the creators successfully merged image, music, and sound to create a deeply intimate and civilian atmosphere in this social ballad from the period of labor unrest at the end of the 19th century. The film won the Golden Lion at the 1947 Venice International Film Festival.
