Sarajevo 1914 DVD
Synopsis
The conspiracy behind the event that ignited World War I unfolds in Sarajevo, 1914. Following the assassination of the Austro-Hungarian heir Franz Ferdinand d'Este and his wife Sophie von Hohenberg on June 28, 1914, this elaborate co-production delves into the aftermath, exploring events immediately following the assassination, often overlooked by official history. While the assassination, carried out by a Serbian, is undeniable, the screenplay examines a possible conspiracy lurking behind the act, reaching into the highest echelons of Austria-Hungary and Germany. Judicial investigator Leo Pfeffer unravels these circumstances during interrogations of the shooter Gavrilo Princip and his associates. However, Pfeffer soon realizes that none of the official authorities are interested in the truth, as Austro-Hungarian and German officers are preoccupied with planning the war against Serbia before Pfeffer's investigation confirms Serbian government involvement in the assassination. Pressures from the grand scheme of history and its orchestrators soon weigh heavily on the principled Pfeffer himself. This German-Czech co-production, also involving Czech Television, focuses on portraying the unsettling predicament of a man who sees the truth but cannot halt the course of history, and is instead confronted with the direct consequences of a development he hopes to reverse.
