Synopsis
Directed by Jiří Weiss in 1959, this film adaptation of Jan Otčenášek's novel captures a brief and tragic love story set during the dark days of the Heydrichiade. Hanka, condemned to live in the Terezín ghetto due to her 'non-Aryan' origins, defies her fate by fleeing from transport. Pavel, empathizing with her plight, risks everything to hide her in a small attic room of his house. Despite warnings from his mother and the perilous times, Pavel visits her daily, sharing rations, learning together, and dreaming of a future post-war. Their friendship gradually blossoms into love. However, their world shatters when a collaborating neighbor, Mrs. Kubiasová, discovers Hanka's hiding place and betrays her.
