Synopsis
In the new film by the team behind Pelíšky and Musíme si pomáhat, we are transported to the time just before the Orwellian year of 1984, in Czechoslovakia. The setting is the slowly flowing, murky waters of the Vltava River in Prague, particularly around the peripheral Libeň Island. The film captures an era tinged with stagnation, much like the river's blind arms and bays, and focuses on the generation of the Prague Spring of 1968, whose dreams and illusions are being slowly buried under the silt of reality. The main character is Bedřich Mára, an academic sculptor living with his family in a small apartment in Prague. He has been pushed to the margins of society and the art world for political reasons, unable to exhibit his work or join the official Union of Visual Artists. In contrast, the family of the elementary school principal Míla Břečka represents those who swim with the mainstream, justifying their actions with the mindset of the times. The film also explores the generation of their teenage children, disenchanted and skeptical of their parents' efforts, aimlessly wandering the suburbs, skipping school, and dreaming of escaping the mundanity of everyday life.
