Our filmmakers adapted F. X. Svoboda's whimsical play about a despotic and irritable man twice. In the more famous "The Last Mohican," the role was played by Jaroslav Marvan, while in the pre-war adaptation we'll now see, it was portrayed by Hugo Haas. Haas embodies a pedantic high school professor who torments his family with absurd demands until a suitor for his daughter enables him to witness firsthand how his behavior is perceived by those closest to him. Alois Kohout is the high school professor, a despotic family tyrant and terror, feared by all in panicked horror. Yet, there is someone who manages to humble Mr. Professor, restore freedom to his family, and even take the professor's daughter to a peaceful marital haven.
