Synopsis
Oil Lamps is a visually rich period drama set at the turn of the 20th century, exploring a troubled marriage shaped by illusion, pride, and quiet despair. Štěpa, an energetic and independent young woman, longs for affection and a meaningful life. She marries her cousin Pavel, a refined army officer whose charm hides deep disillusionment, financial problems, and a devastating illness. As their relationship slowly unravels, hopes of romantic fulfillment give way to emotional distance and growing tension. The film captures the fading elegance of a decaying world, where social expectations and personal weaknesses quietly destroy any chance of happiness. With powerful performances, detailed costumes, striking cinematography, and evocative music by Luboš Fišer, director Juraj Herz creates an intense portrait of love suffocated by circumstance and inner decay.
