Synopsis
The main character is the newly appointed associate professor, Dr. Jakub Johánek, a psychiatrist and shy abstainer, who reluctantly decides to celebrate his appointment with friends at a nightclub. The celebration extends into the late hours, and the copious amount of alcohol causes the protagonist to temporarily lose his memory. The next morning, Johánek, an old bachelor, is astonished by the events. He has long admired his charming neighbor, the poor Kateřina, but his innate shyness has prevented him from making a move. Now, barely recovering from the effects of the excessive alcohol, his resourceful roommate informs him that he assaulted Kateřina while intoxicated, in a somewhat unconventional attempt to help her friend, who also loves the kind and well-off doctor.
