Synopsis
In a small Prague grocery store, a routine inspection led by the incorruptible new employee, Mr. Kurka (Rudolf Hrušínský), marks the 25th anniversary of his death. The store's manager, Milan Vorel (J. Booth), is unfazed, but his deputy, the charming Alena Burdová (A. Heywoodová), is taken aback by the unexpected inventory check. Secretly in love with her boss, Alena had been involved in a two-year affair with him which had recently ended. She has been covering up a shortfall created by Vorel to buy a new car, as expensive cognac and cinzano rarely sell, leaving twelve missing bottles unnoticed. Milan and Alena are now under pressure to replace the alcohol by the next morning when the inventory resumes. They manage to do so, but the stress and effort are immense. However, their relief is short-lived when an inspector accidentally breaks one of the bottles, only to discover it's filled with tea, not cognac. All the expensive bottles, except for the twelve recently replaced ones, are found to be similarly tampered with, unveiling their scheme.
