Night Moth / Nocni motyl DVD
Synopsis
Noční motýl (1941), directed by František Čáp, is a film adaptation of the story "Staša" from Vojtěch Mixa's book "Medvědi a tanečnice" and co-written with Václav Krška. The film is a melodramatic tale of tragic love, telling the story of a respectable girl drawn into the sordid world of a brothel. This seemingly tearful, straightforward narrative gains depth through sensitive scriptwriting and masterful direction, emphasizing psychological aspects influenced by historical and social conditions. Set in a grand, costume-laden spectacle reminiscent of old Austro-Hungary, the film artistically uses the era's rich aesthetics, enhanced by Jan Zázvorka's design and underscored by Strauss's "Emperor Waltz." It features remarkable performances, especially Hana Vítová as the fallen angel and teacher Marta in what is likely her best on-screen performance, and Adina Mandlová as her friend and prostitute, Kiki. The cast includes notable names like Gustav Nezval, Svatopluk Beneš, Rudolf Hrušínský, and Eduard Kohout. "Noční motýl" showcases the vitality and standard of Czech cinema during the constrained conditions of the Protectorate era.
