Synopsis
Micky, while in prison, clings to his desire to meet the successful singer Karin. After hearing about an audition for an upcoming musical where she will play the lead role, he seizes the opportunity and escapes from prison in a freezer truck. A few days later, he applies for the audition under a false name and makes it to the shortlist. Karin arrives with her jealous lover, the wealthy businessman Oskar, who is also sponsoring the show. Despite the librettist's support for Micky in the lead role, the hot-tempered and ruthless director Palo rejects him, preferring the popular singer Franta. Nevertheless, Micky collects the script from the producer Mirek and appears at the first rehearsal, convincing everyone to keep him as an understudy for all male roles. As he gets to know the old actor Michal, the sarcastic Sylva, and the single mother Romana, Detective Kopecký starts his search for the escaped prisoner. Though tension initially prevails in the troupe, some relationships begin to blossom. Romana grows closer to Michal, Micky occasionally babysits her child, and he manages to befriend Karin. When the undisciplined Franta is fired by the director just days before the premiere, Micky gets the lead role. Karin visits him at the theater that evening, they rehearse together, and then make love. However, Micky's photo appears in the newspaper, catching the police's attention.
