Synopsis
The story of The Murderer Hides His Face is based on the true case of the notorious seven-time murderer Mrázek, which garnered significant public attention. Major Kalaš and his assistant, Lieutenant Varga, tackle a complex case involving a series of murders of young women. They decide to take a risky approach by reenacting the attack on the only surviving victim, who suffers from a psychological disorder. This reconstruction poses the danger of worsening her condition. The film, noted for its atmospheric depiction of the fear among people living in the area with an unknown killer, features sensitive cinematography by Jiří Vojta. Alongside Rudolf Hrušínský, the cast includes Radoslav Brzobohatý, Jiří Pleskot, Ferdinand Krůta, and Dr. Miroslav Plzák in the role of a psychiatrist. Shortly after its premiere, the film won the Best Film of the Year award. The character of Major Kalaš, brilliantly portrayed by Rudolf Hrušínský, appears in four films directed by Petr Schulhoff: Fear (1963), The Murderer Hides His Face (1966), On the Trail of Blood (1969), and Diagnosis: Death (1979).
