Synopsis
A regular express train departs from Prague's Main Railway Station to Moravia, but this time with a special consignment guarded by the Public Security under the command of Lieutenant Lenk (R. Brzobohatý). The consignment consists of brand new banknotes intended for circulation. During the journey, however, two tragic events occur over a short section of the track. At the 196th kilometer, a young woman is murdered, and five kilometers further, the mail carriage explodes. Major Kalaš (J. Sovák) and his young colleague Karlíček (J. Hanzlík) take on the case. The first suspect is Lieutenant Lenk, who is the only survivor of the explosion. However, it soon becomes clear that Lenk survived only because the real perpetrator knocked him out, and the clues leading to the resolution of the mystery trace back to Prague... This film in the Major Kalaš series is the only one not directed by Petr Schulhoff, who directed the films Fear (1963), The Murderer Hides His Face (1966), In the Tracks of Blood (1969), and Diagnosis of Death (1979), but by Josef Mach. In this film, the main role is not reprised by Rudolf Hrušínský, as in the others, but by Jiří Sovák.
