Synopsis
After seven years of successfully reprising the stage play with the same name, director Václav Marhoul adapts his own script into a film, inspired by the short stories of American writer Raymond Chandler. Tomáš Hanák stars as private detective Phil Marlowe, a classic hero and romantic cowboy who takes the law into his own hands in the rough prairies of big cities. He is an honest and skeptical hard worker who trudges through his cases, solving them after many mistakes, often tortured and beaten by criminals, and sometimes even by the police. In this world of violence, distrust, and corruption, everything is for sale. Everything except himself. The story is set in Los Angeles in 1937. The basic plot, typical of Chandler's style, revolves around the initially trivial and characteristically Chandleresque task of finding a missing person. However, the entire case is, of course, far more complicated, and Marlowe gradually untangles a whole web of relationships and motives, leading to a successful resolution.
