Synopsis

Young journalist Gareth Jones (James Norton) rose to fame by writing an article about his meeting with Adolf Hitler just after he took power in 1933. Now the ambitious Welshman is trying on his next big topic - the rapid modernisation of the Soviet Union. Wanting to investigate thoroughly, the reporter decides to travel to Moscow to interview Stalin. While there, he meets young journalist Ada Brooks (Vanessa Kirby), working for Walter Duranty (Peter Sarsgaard), through whom he discovers that the truth about Stalin's regime is being brutally suppressed by Soviet censors. Hearing alarming rumours of a major famine in the USSR, Jones goes on a solo trip through Ukraine. The journalist becomes an eyewitness to the tragedy of the Holodomor. Millions starve to death while tonnes of grain are sold abroad to fund the industrialisation of the Soviet empire. On his return to London, Jones writes an article exposing the horrors he experienced. The publication is silenced and its authenticity challenged by Western journalists influenced by the Kremlin. Despite the deadly threats, Gareth persists in his fight for the truth. He decides to share his findings with a young, aspiring writer - George Orwell.
