The Water Sprite is the fourth and penultimate season of the television miniseries cycle Detectives from the Holy Trinity. In her spare time and on her own initiative, Marie Výrová investigates a long-closed police case involving the inexplicable murder of a small child on the outskirts of Olomouc, which occurred over twenty-five years ago. Troubling testimony from a witness of the ancient tragedy compels Marie Výrová to revisit the hopeless case and attempt to clear the unjustly convicted culprit. The story of The Water Sprite unfolds in two time frames: in the years just before the revolution at the end of the communist era in the late 1980s and in the present day. In the first timeline, the case is handled by the criminal police of communist Czechoslovakia under the command of Major Voženil. In the present, Marie uncovers serious flaws in the investigation conducted by the police at that time and reveals the reasons that led to them. The Water Sprite draws inspiration from the classic British detective school, where a lone detective confronts witnesses and participants of the crime, gradually piecing together the events based on more or less reliable testimonies from biased individuals. Genre-wise, it ventures into horror and psychological family drama, showing the destruction of relationships within a family marked by a distant, inexplicably cruel crime. The Water Sprite thus becomes a reflection on justice and the meaning of its fulfillment even after many years.
