Milan Rastislav Stefanik DVD
Synopsis
This biographical film, made in 1935 under the direction of Jan Sviták, tells the life story of a renowned scientist, soldier, and diplomat, who was one of the founders of Czechoslovakia. It begins with a young Rastislav Štefánik, encouraged by his father, a priest injured during a demonstration for Slovak voting rights, to work for the nation abroad. In 1914, Štefánik enlists in the army in Paris and immediately starts negotiations with French generals about forming Czechoslovak units. A year later, he participates in battles in Serbia, where he crashes during an aerial combat. After Austria's occupation of Serbia, he returns to Paris and meets Professor T. G. Masaryk. While World War I rages on, Štefánik, now a general, joins Czechoslovak comrades in the Far East. He only briefly celebrates the founding of the independent Czechoslovak Republic, as his life tragically ends in a plane crash on May 4, 1919, while returning from Rome to Bratislava. The film features Croatian actor Zvonimir Rogoz, known for numerous other Czech films, in his most significant cinematic role, portraying this key figure in Czechoslovak history.
