Description
Milan Kundera: Od Zertu k Bezvyznamnosti / Milan Kundera: From The Joke to Insignificance DVD
Synopsis
Why has Milan Kundera's work captured so much attention around the world? Why did he go to France and start writing in French? What is behind the fact that he prevented translations of his last novels into Czech? Or that he avoids cameras and publicity? The documentary about Kundera's work takes us back to his native Brno, to the time when he studied and taught at FAMU, or to the time of the Normalization, when he was prevented from creating and was not published, even though he was already gaining success abroad. Nevertheless, he introduced Jakub and his master with J. Bartoska, but under a different name.
In the mid-1970s he took advantage of an invitation from the University of Rennes and began lecturing there. In 1979 the Czech authorities stripped him of his citizenship. Kundera commented on this by saying: "The Russians controlled everything then, and it was the Russians who decided that I was no longer Czech." President Mitterand granted him French citizenship. He published his most famous novel, The Unbearable Lightness of Being, while still French. Later, however, he no longer gave permission for his works to be made into films.
