Synopsis
Set in the final days of World War II, this Czechoslovakian-Soviet anthology film captures the liberation and the individual stories of its characters. A weary Russian general finds respite in a country home, reflecting on his war experiences while engaging with the innocent yet insightful perspective of a four-year-old boy, Dušan. A Czech teacher, Jana, forms a bond with the charismatic commander of an engineering unit, Rukavičkin, but their budding romance is thwarted by something as trivial as a wiped school blackboard. Mr. Novák returns from a concentration camp, only to discover his apartment in Malá Strana taken over by a fanatical German sniper. Meanwhile, Prague witnesses the journey of its first post-war tram, driven by a Russian sergeant who's a civilian tram driver in his regular life. Directed by Stanislav Rostocký in 1959, the film 'May Stars' focuses on timeless, subtly lyrical stories of ordinary people. Masterfully captured through mundane details like a military cap or school chalk, the film adapts Ludvík Aškenazy's short story collection 'May Stars'. Aškenazy's screenplay skillfully conveys strong emotional experiences through seemingly insignificant moments, offering a poignant view of life during this historic period.
