Description
Marysa DVD
Synopsis
Set in a rural village, the film 'Maryša' tells a tragic tale of a forced marriage. Financed by a Brno-based company, the film required alterations to its well-known source material, including changing the setting and rewriting dialogues in a specific dialect for greater authenticity and visual appeal, particularly to showcase the vibrant Vlčnov costumes. Some scenes, such as the wedding, were even shot in color for added spectacle, although these colored segments were not widely used in distribution. Another significant change was the emphasis on the positive influence of the Catholic Church and a more conciliatory ending, diluting the impactful and concise climax of the original. Despite these alterations and the portrayal of some characters (like Francek) that barely matched the demanding vision of the source's authors, 'Maryša', directed by Rovenský, stands as one of the most significant works in Czech cinema from the first half of the 1930s.
