Martin Rajnis: Twenty Five Thousand Days of Memories (english)
Synopsis
Architect, professor and author of many professional publications M. Rajniš decided to write his memoirs from his life full of travel, unusual twists and turns, successes and downfalls. As a troublemaker and provocateur who has been forging his own path all his life, he wants to show the reader that even a man, a nobody, who was almost pushed into an auxiliary school, can live a perfect life. "I wish that the reader would loosen up as I tell the story, start speaking in slang, and enjoy the beautifully pronounced Czech swear words that shine through like praline on a cake." Prof. Ing. arch. Martin Rajniš (* May 16, 1944, Prague) is a Czech architect and urban planner, co-founder of the Czech Chamber of Architects, several architectural offices and founder of the Hut' Architektury studio. He worked as a teacher at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague and at the Technical University in Liberec. He is best known as the author of the new Post Office in Sněžka or the Lighthouse and Museum of Jára Cimrman in the Jizera Mountains. He focuses on experimental architecture and the relationship of architecture to nature and human society. Martin Rajniš about the book... I really have a good memory and for many years I felt it necessary to share the stories I have experienced over the last 70 years. Fate threw a lovely creature into my path, Magda (Křížková) Šebestová, who transformed my roughly 100-hour-long narrative into 900 pages of text, which eventually became a concentrated elixir of what we think is the best in 120 pages of this book. I think the readers will also enjoy the beautiful photos, among others from my numerous exotic trips, of which there will be more than a hundred. The work is called 25,344 Days of Memories, which describes 71 years of my life, during which I have experienced a lot - childhood in old Prague with all kinds of educational experiments of my father, times of poverty and defiance against the Bolsheviks, I was in prison twelve times. I spent four years at sea, crossing the Atlantic on a small ship with a beautiful girl. I have travelled hundreds of thousands of miles through deserts, wildernesses, forests, I have crossed the upper reaches of the Amazon, I have been to the most backward parts of New Guinea. But at the same time, I have managed large studios as an architect, and nearly 14 billion crowns have passed through my hands in construction costs. I have experienced Paris as a homeless person and as a winner of the World Architecture Prize... Collaboration with Magda (Křížková) Šebestová I met Magda in the late seventies, when we were making a pavilion for an exhibition in Canada during the Bolshevism boom - I as a young architect and she as a hostess. I remembered her from when she was a little girl singing with Jiri Suchy in Semafor. After that we didn't see each other for many years and it was only when she came to interview me for Xanthipa that I realized how good she was at asking questions, how good her face was and, most importantly, how good she was at writing... so I offered her that we could try to write my memoirs together and, thank God, she nodded...
