Maria Theresa 3 / Marie Terezie 3 DVD
Synopsis
The fifth and final installment in the grand historical film series about the illustrious monarch is set between 1760 and 1780. Marie Terezie is puzzled by her husband, František Štěpán's preoccupation with the monarchy's financial woes, as her priority is to ensure lasting peace and prosperity through marital diplomacy. Meanwhile, both parents remain unaware of the complex adolescence of their eldest son, Josef, who is destined to inherit the Habsburg throne. In addition to depicting Marie Terezie's reign, the series allows us to witness Josef II's tumultuous journey from a neglected child through challenging co-rule with his mother to reconciling his parents' legacies. His first marriage to the charming Isabella of Parma ends in tragic disappointment. During a smallpox epidemic, which claims the lives of Josef's siblings, the Empress must suppress her maternal despair and pursue her goal of unifying European nations. She compels Josef into another marriage, this time with Maria Josepha of Bavaria, who fails to match Isabella's allure. Amidst escalating tensions, Josef sharply opposes his father, whom he sees as dissolute. Only after František Štěpán's death and subsequent conflict with his mother does Josef realize his father's true role in the empire's governance. It's only after his mother's death that Josef comprehends the significance of both parents' legacies for the monarchy's future – and what he alone can do. In this installment, A. Friesz excels in the role of Josef, leaving a lasting impression alongside V. Kotek's superb portrayal of František Štěpán and U. Straussová's exceptional depiction of Marie Terezie.
