Synopsis
This story revolves around a protagonist whose life is marked by a series of unfortunate events. His journey into misfortune begins with a desperate act to save his wife's life by stealing money, but tragically, she dies in childbirth. After serving time in prison, he finds himself unable to face his daughter, who has been placed in an orphanage. His life further spirals downward after a bar fight, fearing another arrest, he flees abroad. As time passes, now aged and ailing, he yearns to return to his homeland. The story is told through an extensive retrospective, unfolding in the protagonist's mind as he suffers from a severe fever. This film was presented at the 7th Venice International Film Festival in 1939.
