Lovers & Murderers / Milenci a vrazi DVD
Synopsis
The film is a dynamically shot grotesque, a kind of flipbook of human fates unfolding rapidly before us with perspective and humor. Directed by the experienced Václav Polesný and based on the famous novel by Vladimír Páral, it's a cinematic delicacy with excellent acting performances, period hits, and music by K. Svoboda. The film adaptation paints a bitter picture of human desire for pleasure, power, wealth, and a panoramic view of the recurring situations in the history of modern society. The story is driven by the explosive force of hatred from those "below" who yearn for the joy of love and social recognition, and the sophistication, as well as fatigue, of the world of people "above" who have had their fill of love and power, and thus, somewhat willingly, succumb to the onslaught of barbarism. The false hopes spin the crazy carousel of human life towards the final lost illusions. The central setting is a house in Ústí nad Labem, where random and permanent employees of a local factory alternate. The story of Borek Trojan (J. Langmajer), an ambitious engineer, and his love for Zita Gráfová (Z. Adamovská), the wife of the factory director, and the story of young Roman Gráf (J. Prachař), who loves the restless Madda (K. Kloubková) desperately to the point of self-destruction, form the core axes of this multi-layered narrative set in the 1960s with an extension to the period after 1989.
