Liduska and Her Musician / Muzikantska Liduska DVD
Synopsis
Liduška Staňková (J. Štěpničková), the daughter of wealthy farmer Souček (G. Hilmar), is in love with Toník (G. Nezval), a talented violinist and son of the village musician Jaroše (K. Černý). Her love is not taken seriously by anyone, and she is forced by her parents to marry the wealthy Krejza (V. Pfeiffer). During the wedding ceremony, the love-stricken girl runs away from the altar to be with her beloved Toník, who has left to explore the world in defiance. Unable to find him, Liduška becomes mentally distressed. Her parents are heartbroken to see their daughter's indifference, only briefly interrupted by moments of clarity whenever she hears music. This leads her to be nicknamed Muzikantská Liduška. The film, an adaptation of a story by Vítězslav Hálek (incorrectly credited as Vítězslav Nezval in the opening titles), premiered in June 1940. It was well-received by the audience and critics, especially for its national sentiment, during the difficult times of occupation. It ran for eleven and a half weeks in Prague cinemas Blaník and Světozor. Praised for the performances of its lead actors Jiřina Štěpničková and Gustav Nezval, the film earned director Martin Frič and Jiřina Štěpničková the National Award.
