Synopsis
The ancient legend of the Pied Piper, a man with a flute, has no beginning or end. For centuries, the Piper has wandered from city to city, his face taking countless forms. In the mysterious streets of old Prague, his story comes to life for just one day, perhaps only to become a film. He appears at the turn of a year as a specter and vanishes just as suddenly. On his first steps through the city, he sees Agnes, Kristián, and the future witnesses of their wedding vow, touring churches in an open red convertible, seeking a marriage ceremony. The girl, with a wreath in her hair and new life beneath her heart, is rejected everywhere with Kristián. The man with the flute, clad in a long coat and gifted with the extraordinary ability to purify people, has never known love. For him and Agnes, their meeting is like lightning from a clear sky. Kristián calls out in vain for his love, and the devil sets traps in vain. In that frenzied New Year's Eve night, a bond is born, but it comes with a price. Everyone loses something, everyone must give something up.
Krysař, inspired by Viktor Dyk's work of the same name and Daniel Landa's musical, is a unique and original filmic reflection of the old legend. In response to why the film was shot 'live' over 24 hours, F. A. Brabec - co-screenwriter, cinematographer, and director - explains, 'I tried to find a key to presenting Krysař in a way that would retain a strong emotional love story while avoiding creating 'just' a classic period piece. The extreme conditions of filming, requiring everyone to give their all, helped to intensify the emotional penetration under the skin of all characters. There was no room for falsehood, no time for it. We played with natural exhaustion, with the cold, and with the obligation to complete something. I believe we achieved greater authenticity and expressiveness in the acted scenes, and that the audience will be drawn into the story with the same commitment as the entire film crew.
