Synopsis
The film by renowned Polish director Andrzej Wajda revisits one of the darkest events in modern Polish history: the massacre of nearly twenty-five thousand Polish soldiers and civilians by the Soviet secret police, the NKVD, in 1940. This traumatizing event, long shrouded in falsified evidence, conflicting facts, and uncertainties, was aptly termed the Katyn Lie. Despite the discovery of mass graves by the Germans in 1941, Moscow blamed the massacre on the Germans, and Western European countries remained silent. It wasn't until 1990 that Russia admitted Stalin had ordered the murders of Polish military and social elites. However, Russia still refuses to declassify related documents or recognize the massacre as genocide. The drama begins on September 17, 1939, when the Soviet Union invaded Poland, shortly after the devastating attack by the German army. The story focuses on the couple Jerzy and Anna, using their narrative to depict the fate of relatives of captured Polish officers and the tragic end of the prisoners. The screenplay is based on the book "Katyn: Post Mortem" by Andrzej Mularczyk. Wajda's perspective captures not only the brutal atrocities committed by both Stalinist and Nazi regimes in 1940s Poland, driven by totalitarian ideologies and state power, but also their subsequent propaganda manipulation and the punishment of those who dared to challenge the official lies. The film incorporates contemporary documentary footage and depicts the massacre in a highly realistic and uncompromising manner, presenting the events from the viewpoint of ordinary people.
