Karel Hynek Macha+Gypsies / Karel Hynek Macha+Cikani DVD
Synopsis
Karel Hynek Macha
The censorship's rejection of Mácha's novel Cikáni sparks outrage among students and actors. Mácha refuses to attend theater rehearsals and jealously guards his love, Lori, from patriots. As the emperor's coronation in Prague approaches, Palacký urges the literary public to compose celebratory verses. Mácha writes a short poem, which is dismissed by the governor. He isolates himself to finish his poetic work "May" and his studies, and to care for Lori, who has borne his son Ludvíček and is shunned by her family for her illegitimate relationship with Mácha. "May" is finally published, but receives mostly devastating criticism, though students warmly embrace it. Mácha secures a job in Litoměřice and regularly walks to Prague to visit Lori and their son. He plans to marry Lori and have her move with him, but tragically falls ill while heroically fighting a fire and dies of pneumonia. The tragic news is delivered to Lori by Mácha's brother, Michal.

Synopsis
Gypsies/Cikani
This tragic tale highlights the devastating impact of unrequited love and betrayal. Giacomo's journey, marked by loss and heartache, reflects the harsh realities of a society governed by class and power disparities. The boy he raises, symbolizing a glimmer of hope and renewal, ultimately faces his own tragedy, mirroring the cycle of sorrow that began with Giacomo and Angelina. Set against the backdrop of the picturesque yet unforgiving landscapes of Venice and the Czech countryside, the story weaves a poignant narrative of love, loss, and the relentless pursuit of justice in a world where it often remains elusive.
