Janosik DVD
This is the second adaptation of the legendary story of the Slovak folk hero, with a standout performance by Pal'o Bielik in the titular role of Juro Jánošík. Upon returning from his studies, Juro finds his father has been beaten to death in prison and his mother is gone. He retreats to the mountains, joining other men to avenge the cruelty of the nobility. Director Martin Frič received the Czechoslovak film award for this film in 1936, and Ferdinand Pečenka won for best cinematography. "Jánošík" was favorably received by international film critics at the Venice Biennale and was sold to 32 countries in the same year, making it the only Czechoslovak film of the First Republic era to successfully penetrate major European and non-European markets. "Jánošík" represents a unique attempt to create a true Czechoslovak film, both artistically and in terms of economic production.
