Synopsis
In this cinematic adaptation of Eva Kantůrková's novel, "Jan Hus" tells the story of the titular Czech hero, portrayed by Matěj Hádek. Set in 15th-century Prague, it explores Hus' moral and intellectual struggle against the corrupt practices of the Church, particularly the sale of indulgences. The film highlights Hus' confrontations with powerful figures including King Wenceslaus IV, his brother Sigismund, and the ambitious clergy. Despite support from Queen Žofie and the common people, Hus faces betrayal and opposition, particularly from his former ally, Štěpán Páleč. Convicted of heresy at the Council of Constance, Hus remains steadfast in his beliefs, leading to his martyrdom at the stake, symbolizing his enduring legacy of truth and faith.
