Synopsis
Jindřich Tůma, a partner at the gas mask store "Asana," has a highly energetic wife who promotes vegetarianism. Tůma expends all his energy on secretly indulging in meat dishes and solving puzzles. The true driving force behind the business is engineer Ivan Kareš, who also leads civil defense exercises. During a street drill for an air raid, Kareš sternly reprimands a girl, Věrka, for not seeking shelter. She is Tůma's niece, arriving from the countryside to study in Prague. Tůma's son, Jirka, was supposed to pick her up at the train station but missed her. Věrka joins a music class and soon shares enthusiasm with classmates for an unknown composer named Michal Marhan. Kareš gives a lecture on civil defense to the class, leading to another encounter with Věrka. He tries to convince the girls of the need for concrete life ideals. At the premiere of Marhan's operetta "Song of Happiness," it is revealed that Kareš is the composer. The girls give him a standing ovation. Ivan blatantly ignores Věrka, with whom he recently quarreled. The stubborn girl decides to leave town. However, Kareš catches up with her train and enters Věrka's compartment. Based on the novel by Jaromíra Hüttlová, the film features documentary footage of a public civil defense exercise.
