Description

Funeral Ceremony / Smutecni slavnost DVD
Synopsis
The synopsis of the long-banned film, based on the novel by Eva Kantůrková, unfolds in two timelines: it depicts the exile of a rebellious farmer and, several years later, his funeral in the village he was never allowed to return to - not even in death. The local power elite rightfully fears the funeral ceremony, as the procession of mourners could easily turn into a silent act of dissent. Director Zdenek Sirový, who structured this balladically toned story into three parts, captured how the alleged "socialism with a human face" only differs from Stalinism in the openness of its repressions, while the lust for power remains the same. The drama, almost reaching the magnitude of an ancient tragedy, introduces a determined woman, the widow of the deceased, who, despite the frightened servant of God and in defiance of local officials, insists on a dignified final journey for her husband. In doing so, the filmmakers avoid heroizing their characters.
