Emberek a havason / People on the Alps DVD
Synopsis
Az Emberek a havason," István Szőts' first major feature film shot in 1941–42, stars János Görbe and Alice Szellay and is based on József Nyirő's "Kopjafák" and "Havasok." This film, considered a precursor to modern Hungarian cinema, portrays the tragic story of a young Székely family, illustrating the struggles of impoverished mountain people like shepherds and loggers, who are deeply connected to their faith and homeland despite being vulnerable to nature and societal constraints. Premiering at the 1942 Venice International Film Festival and winning a Biennale prize, it has been acclaimed as one of the significant works in Hungarian film history, recognized both in the "New Budapest Twelve" and among the top 53 Hungarian films..
