Synopsis
Probuzení, a 1959 Czech drama directed by Jiří Krejčík, centers around Jitka, a sixteen-year-old untrained hairdresser played by Jana Brejchová. Fleeing from a youth home, she returns to a gang of hooligans led by Vilda, roaming Prague's passages and living off minor thefts and cons. Jitka's life takes a turn when she falls for Tonka, a waiter's apprentice, but hesitates to involve him in her troubled world. Despite her reservations, Tonka gets drawn into the gang's activities. The film, presented in retrospective narrative, contrasts Jitka's rebellious past with her transformed present as a well-groomed, responsible young woman, a framing added against director Krejčík's initial intentions. "Probuzení" delves into themes of youthful rebellion and moral dilemmas in post-war Czech society.
