Description
Synopsis
The film by Jan Hřebejk and Petr Jarchovský, set during World War II, explores the concepts of heroism and cowardice through the lens of small, human fates. Childless couple, the Čížeks (A. Šišková and B. Polívka), decide in 1943 to hide a Jewish fugitive, David Wiener, son of Mr. Čížek's former employer, in a secret pantry in their apartment. Mr. Čížek is acutely aware of the danger he has brought upon his household and neighbors, yet considers helping someone in need a moral obligation. However, he is a considerably unheroic hero, consumed by fear. His personal situation becomes increasingly complicated as the war nears its end, facing threats not only from the Germans but also from honorable Czech fellow citizens.
