Synopsis
A continuation of Otakar Vávra’s grand historical saga, this film follows the aftermath of the Munich Agreement — the tragic turning point that shaped the fate of Czechoslovakia. Drawing on preserved stenographic records of government meetings, it reconstructs the political, military, and social consequences of the 1938 betrayal. The film contrasts the defeated attitude of President Beneš with the determined stance of Klement Gottwald and portrays the struggles of workers, soldiers, and families caught in the turmoil. Although presented as a historical chronicle, the film bears the ideological imprint of its time, portraying communists as the only true defenders of the nation.
