Synopsis
The novel Circus Humberto was based on a real circus with which Eduard Bass spent two years of his life. Today, almost everyone knows the name Humberto - also thanks to the 1988 TV series. The novel follows the lives of several generations of circus performers from the 1860s to the 1920s. The main character is Vasek Karas, who arrives in Hamburg as a six-year-old boy with his widowed father Antonín. And because his father cannot find work as a bricklayer, he accepts an offer as a circus bandleader and begins to earn a living as a trumpeter and builder. Little Vasek is enchanted by the circus. He meets many people there and learns the skills that are needed in the circus. He becomes an acrobat, a horseman and a beast tamer and, after marrying the director's only daughter Helena, a circus director. However, in a time of global crisis, the circus is heading towards extinction. Vasek, his family and a few friends move to Prague, where he builds a famous variety show that has been a huge success for two decades. Today, the novel Circus Humberto is rightly one of the classics of Czech literature.
