Synopsis
The year is 1945, the ruins of war are coming to an end. In lands swept by the hurricane of warfare, people are trying to live anew.
The title character, an army doctor, confronts the new reality with cunning, humour and a sense of observation and imitation. Donning an officer's uniform, he impersonates a high-ranking UB official. In doing so, he sets in motion a whole series of improbable events. And because he is a righteous man, he makes use of a successful mystification, pulling people out of Stalinist prisons. In this way, he also wants to impress and win the heart of Krysia, the girl he has fallen in love with. But mystification is first and foremost a form of stress relief, an attempt to get out of the circle of war, death, a glimpse of peace. Colonel Kwiatkowski plays va banque - he pays unexpected visits to various UB establishments, ridicules the stupidity and cowardice of the new law enforcers. He even pretends to be a colleague of Minister Radkiewicz. Once he seems untouchable, he is accidentally exposed by an UB colonel, Kizior, whom he has operated on in a military hospital. The latter, because of his debt of gratitude, treats 'Kwiatek' gently, keeping up his former offer to join the UB. The alternative is long-term imprisonment ...
