Description

Citizen Havel / Obcan Havel DVD
Synopsis
In the spring of 2006, documentary filmmaker Pavel Koutecký was on the verge of completing a significant project—capturing the life and work of Václav Havel over thirteen years, a unique privilege that included intimate access. However, Pavel's untimely and tragic death left the task to his friends and colleagues. The resulting film, besides being a portrait of Havel, offers a nuanced and humanizing look at the charismatic leader through a combination of significant moments and seemingly ordinary events, presenting a chronicle that resonates with audiences, connecting them to the shared experiences of life.

In-depth and intimate

This documentary follows Vaclav Havel for a very specific period in time: during his tenure as president of Czechoslovakia, and later Czech republic, from 1989-2003. The movie project is a collaboration with a documentary film maker, and so starts with him taking the role of the presidency. It follows him on his journey while trying to steer the newly liberated republic unto a path of becoming a consolidated democracy, as well as a prosperous and sovereign state. It is truly fascinating how intimate and unfiltered we get to this man, this symbol, this leader. We get to watch him haggle with his political opponents, grieve the loss of his wife, celebrate his re-election, but also doubt his political capabilities and desire to run for re-election. We get to see a diverse selection of his life and personality, both the impressive and ugly, disappointing and awe-inspiring. Thank God that the film-makers released it with English subtitles.
