Description
Because We Don't Forget / Smrt si rika Engelchen DVD
Synopsis
Ladislav Mňačko's novel 'Smrt si říká Engelchen' ('Death is Called Engelchen'), first published in 1959, offers a unique perspective on the often clichéd theme of partisan warfare. Based on authentic experiences, Mňačko avoids glorification or oversimplification, focusing instead on the psychological depth of his characters. The novel's unconventional approach to literary and human conventions provides an open portrayal of one aspect of the partisan resistance. Adapted into a film in 1963 by the directorial duo Ján Kadár and Elmar Klos, known for enriching Czechoslovak cinema, the film stands out as a remarkable work of the 1960s. It features complex psychological portrayals, notably by Jan Kačer as the young, severely wounded partisan Pavel, and Eva Poláková in one of her greatest roles as Marta. The film's dual timeline and intricate character development highlight the era's artistic innovation.
