Synopsis
Czech drama film. Hlavsa, the generally respected director of a small town savings bank, commits embezzlement on account of his profligate and pampered wife. When the situation is beyond rectifying he shoots himself. His mother, a simple village woman, takes on her widowed daughter-in-law and adolescent grandson with the stipulation that both of them help her reimburse the loss. For the town lady the arduous village work is distressful. The same goes for young Borik, a talented pianist, who has given up with difficulty on his dreams of pursuing an artistic career. Both eventually leave the old woman. Yet Barbora perseveres. Through hard work and an austere self-denial she succeeds in repaying her son's debt. The awareness that she has saved her family's honour and the penitent return of her grandson are for her the highest rewards.
