Synopsis
Since 1993, the Janáček Academy of Performing Arts has awarded the title of doctor honoris causa to the most important personalities of the Czech and international dramatic and musical arts. So far, 19 titles have been awarded to master artists, e.g. The Czech playwright and former president Václav Havel, the British playwright and screenwriter Tom Stoppard, the Italian-Danish theatre director Eugenio Barba, the Norwegian writer and playwright Jon Fosse, the Czech-American screenwriter and film director Vojtěch Jasný, the British musicologist John Tyrell, the Czech opera singer Magdalena Kožená, etc. This representative publication, published on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the school's foundation, presents all these personalities both in their thank-you speeches delivered at the ceremonial meetings of the JAMU Artistic Council and in laudatory speeches (laudatio) delivered in honour of the award-winning masters and written by the most prominent pedagogical personalities of the JAMU or close associates of the honorary doctors. The texts are accompanied by photographs documenting the awarding of honorary degrees. The bilingual Czech-English publication is set in mirror format and was published with the financial support of the Statutory City of Brno and the South Moravian Region.
