The film Dead Among the Living was made in 1946 by director Bořivoj Zeman - it was his directorial debut. For Karel Höger, who was given the lead role in the film, it became his second significant opportunity to switch from lover's roles to character roles. The Dead Among the Living gave Höger the opportunity to explore for the first time in the character of the postal clerk Valta the problem of personal bravery and cowardice, which was suggested in the plot by the fact that, as a postal clerk, he refused to risk his life to save the money entrusted to him during the robbery of the post office. In the context of the Nazi occupation that had just been overcome, this problem of personal bravery took on a particularly pressing significance.
