Synopsis
Two months after the execution of Imre Nagy and his associates, two Hungarian emigrants staged an armed attack on the Hungarian embassy in Bern. Their motive was unclear, although according to local media, their goal was to seize the Hungarian ambassador and use him as a hostage to gain access to documents related to Hungarian communist agents operating in Switzerland. Alexander Nagy and Endre Papp, however, reportedly intended their action as a protest, aiming to highlight the illegitimacy of political events in their home country. They essentially achieved their goal, as the assassination attempt and the unsuccessful revolution were reported by foreign media day by day for several weeks. The matter also resonated in international and diplomatic forums and received attention from world leaders.
