Description
This Italian-language edition presents Dante Alighieri’s Divine Comedy as one hundred cantos of the highest poetry and the first text of Italian literature. The immortal work of Italy’s greatest poet appears here with a critical text based on the latest version established by Giorgio Petrocchi. Boccaccio was the first to call Dante’s Comedy “Divine,” while the title Divine Comedy first appeared in a 1555 edition. The meaning of Dante’s journey through the afterlife can be traced in the debated Epistle to Cangrande della Scala, to whom the author dedicates Paradise. Dante explains that he wanted to show humanity that the only way to rise above its sinful condition and attain truth and salvation is through the proper use of reason. Through this allegorical journey, the poet, and humanity with him, leaves behind “the dark wood” of misery and becomes worthy of reaching the divine.
