Description
This Spanish-language novel, a biblical epic that inspired Elia Kazan’s famous film starring James Dean as the legendary Cal Trask, follows two families through three generations, from the American Civil War to the Second World War, in California’s remote Salinas Valley. After accompanying the Hamilton family as they make their epic settlement in the region, the reader enters the oppressive world of the Trasks. Adam, abandoned by his wife, whom no one in the family dares to name, tries to raise his sons Cal and Aron along the righteous path. The brothers, new versions of Cain and Abel, engage in a subdued struggle for their father’s recognition. When Cal feels strangely drawn to the mysterious Cathy Adams, who runs the area’s most famous brothel, a curse falls upon the young man, condemning him to remain east of an elusive Eden.
