In this third volume of the novel 1Q84, the voices of Aomame – the enigmatic gym instructor and assassin – and Tengo – the mathematics teacher and writer – are joined by a new character, a detective named Ushikawa. His latest mission, commissioned by Vanguardia, the mysterious religious cult, was to determine whether Aomame was trustworthy enough to work for the leader. Ushikawa approved of the young woman, but she betrayed them all, committed another murder, and then disappeared. If the detective fails to find her, the cult's revenge will fall upon him.
