Where is the boundary beyond which even the best intentions can no longer justify the means used? The darkest time of year arrives in Ísafjörður. As Christmas approaches, the calm of the remote Icelandic village is shattered by a horrific discovery: a mutilated body is found at a salmon farm in the Westfjords. Investigator Hildur Rúnarsdóttir and Finnish police trainee Jakob Johanson have barely begun their investigation when another equally disturbing murder takes place in a remote part of Iceland, followed soon by a third. As she investigates the series of brutal acts of violence, Hildur relaxes by surfing the icy Atlantic waves, but she remains troubled by her failure to find her middle sister, Rósa. Meanwhile, Jakob does everything he can to win a difficult custody battle over his son. How far is he willing to go in this unequal fight for his child? Hildur asks herself this question when she receives the worst possible phone call from the police station in Kolari, Finland. The novel shifts its focus from the main character, Hildur, to her Finnish police trainee Jakob Johanson and presents an emotional, psychologically oriented detective story set between Iceland and Finland.
