Art restorer and legendary spy Gabriel Allon has secretly slipped into London to attend a reception at the Courtauld Gallery celebrating the return of a stolen self-portrait by Vincent van Gogh. However, when an old friend from the Devon and Cornwall police asks for his help in investigating a mysterious murder, he discovers that he now faces another powerful and dangerous adversary.
The victim is Charlotte Blake, a famous art history professor from Oxford, who spends weekends in the same seaside village where Gabriel once lived under a false identity. Her murder appears to be the work of a devilish serial killer terrorizing the Cornish countryside. Yet, there are several striking inconsistencies, including a missing mobile phone and a mysterious three-letter cipher left in her study.
