In Guatemala, I describe the colorful market in Chichicastenango, authentic rituals, the sacred Mayan lake Atitlán, as well as the smoking demon Maximón. My interest also extends to Antigua - the former capital of the country, and Tikal - the city of the voices of Mayan spirits and pyramids, also listed as a UNESCO site. ***** The exotic islands of French Polynesia - Tahiti, Bora Bora, or Moorea are known to us as a distant tourist paradise. In my book, I also offer explanations of the mysterious words mana, mahu, and tabu. I talk about royal sanctuaries - marae, traditional gods, and tiki statues. ***** In Japan, I was enchanted by the strictly male and oldest Japanese sport called sumo. ***** Besides touring hotels, I experienced a wedding ceremony in Sri Lanka and explored the history in the town of Galle, which is listed as a UNESCO site. In the center of the island, I admired Kandy with the Buddha's tooth and tea plantations, the monolith Sigiriya, and the city of temples in the rock of Dambulla, both also UNESCO sites. ***** The war in the country and the destruction of monuments was the real reason to write about Syria as I remember it - before the war.
