Description
The contents are in Czech. It is the beginning of the 15th century. After prayers, the monks in a monastery peacefully bake bread, but one of them is gripped by doubts about his faith. When he desperately begs for a sign from God, he feels burning throughout his body and his mind fills with psychedelic visions. Has his final hour come? He seems destined to die and meet the Almighty, so why is a strange fellow floating beside him in grubby shorts, wearing one sock and sunglasses? St Anthony’s Fire explores ergotism, a condition caused by ergot, specifically the parasitic fungus Claviceps purpurea, which infects certain grains. After consumption, it causes severe physical symptoms such as tingling and muscle spasms, hallucinations and delirious states. In fact, in 1938 the Swiss chemist Albert Hoffman first synthesized lysergic acid diethylamide, or LSD, from ergot. Follow the medieval monk on a visually swirling psychotropic journey.
